One or two wicks (cotton rope or felt) connect the water reservoir below to the growing medium above. By capillary action the nutrient solution climbs the wick and keeps the medium constantly moist, so the plant drinks on its own — exactly as much as it needs. Roots can also grow down through the wide holes toward the reservoir. Not for large, thirsty plants like tomato or pepper. Use an inert medium (perlite, coco coir, LECA) + a cotton\/felt wick + a hydroponic nutrient.
